Four years ago, Johnny Drille dropped “Wait for Me” which brought him into the limelight. However, this light has not been as bright as those of the top artistes in the industry. Just this past Tuesday, Drille said “They may not appreciate my music as much right now but in good time they will, they won’t be able to deny it anymore. Anyway, I won’t stop making awesome music anytime soon”
Johnny Drille is one of the first names to be listed while discussing underrated artistes in Nigeria. It is not surprising as Nigerians are more inclined to Afrobeats rather than alternative or folk music which is his genre.
Don Jazzy has previously admitted to taking a risk on Johnny Drille’s music as it is not popular in Nigeria. He later expressed hope that Nigerians would warm up to his sound as time progresses. Jazzy said, “I hope Nigerians start to appreciate more of Johnny Drille’s sound. I have loved him for like three years now. I have listened to him for like three years but I was thinking, are Nigerians going to like this? Are they going to buy this thing? How many fans are we going to get to fill up Eko Hotel?” Don Jazzy said expressing his fears at the beginning.
Although Johnny Drille has done incredibly well for himself, there is no doubt that the artiste is yet to reach his full potential in the Nigerian music industry.
In order to fully appreciate Johnny’s music in Nigeria, we would have to step out of our musical comfort zone. We have to experience a pristine fusion of sounds and a unique storyline to every song. Not The same sound every time.
Johnny Drille believes that with time, Nigerians would begin to value his sound. I personally have no doubt about it too.
