Top 50 Charts Profile: Sarkodie

Top 50 Charts Artiste Profile is a platform where we select artistes who we believe are music geniuses and have made a substantial impact in the music industry. We highlight their humble beginnings, works, and achievements. The artiste we are profiling this week is “Sarkordie”.

Humble Beginnings

Sarkodie whose real names are ‘Michael Owusu Addo’. He was born and raised in Tema where he also attended his high school. He later proceeded to IPMC where he earned a degree in graphic design. While in school, Sarkodie had already started rapping and began a career in it as an underground rapper. While going for various rap battles, he met his former manager,  Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment. After their encounter, Sarkordie started engaging with other artistes and gained popularity from it.


After Duncan Williams took over the management of Sarkodie, he started meeting other artistes and producer like “Hammer of The Last Two”. Hammer decided to feature Sarkodie on two songs off his album. The tracks gave Sarkodie prominence in Ghana as fans were impressed with his flow and style. After the album, Sarkodie released his debut single “Baby” which featured Mugeez. The song was a hit and gave Sarkodie more recognition all over Ghana.

Fast-forward to 2009, Sarkodie released his debut album titled “Makye”. “Baby and “Push” were some of the famous songs off the album. The album blew up in Ghana and it received positive reviews from critics and a positive reception from fans.

In 2012, Sarkordie released his Sophormore album titled “Rapperholic”. The album had fire tracks like “You Go Kill Me”, “Give It To Me”, “Efya I’m In Love With You” and many more. Furthermore, he also featured artistes like Chidinma, Efya, EL, Mugeez, Jayso and many more on the album. The album spread through Ghana like wild fire and even earned him a BET Award.

Due to the success of his hit track “You Go Kill ME”, a year later, Sarkodie released a remix of the song. The remix featured Wizkid, Iceprince, EL and Navio. The remix peaked at number 1 on various charts in Ghana.

Fast-forward to the 2nd of January, 2014, Sarkodie released his 3rd studio album titled “Sarkology”. “Sarkology” compiled of 30 tracks. The album was a global success and was widely accepted by all. The album featured hit tracks like, “Gunshot”, “Special Someone”, “Pon D Ting”, “Down On One”, “Adonai” and many more hit tracks. Furthermore, the album features artistes like Davido, Fuse ODG, Burna Boy, AKA, Castro, Joey B, Stonebwoy, and many more.

On the 30th of December, 2015, Sarkordie released an E.P titled “Mary”. “Mary” was a live recorded album named after his late grandmother who died in 2012. The album featured tracks like “Mewu”, “Sarkcess Story”, “Mary” and many more.

Furthermore, on the 8th of September 2017, Sarkodie released another album titled “Highest”. The album comprises of 19 songs, including 3 interludes and a bonus track. The album featured artistes like Runtown, Jesse Jagz, Moelogo, Flavour, Victoria Kimani and many more.

Also, Sarkordie released an E.P titled “Alpha” this year. The E.P comprises of 6 tracks. It also features artistes like Joey B, and Ebony. One of the lead Tracks from the album is “Legend” Which features Joey B.


Sarkordie has achieved quite a lot in his career so far. On the 16th of September 2009, he  performed alongside Busta Rhymes at the Busta Rhymes Live in Ghana concert. Also, Vodafone Ghana Music Award awarded Sarkordie as the artiste of the Decade in 2015. Furthermore, Sarkodie was also featured on the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher alongside Talib Kweli, Jean Grae and Ab-Soul.

Also, Sarkordie has had lots of Tours in his career. He has been to New York, Canada, France and many more. On the 8th of August 2015, Sarkodie performed at the New York City’s iconic Apollo Theater.

Furthermore, in terms of personal success, Sarkodie launched his own record label, Sarkcess Music, in 2014. Also, on the 27th of February, 2016, Sarkodie spoke to a group of Harvard Business School students. It was themed “The Art of the Hustle”.

In addition to Sarkodie’s achievements, He has also won a lot of awards in his Career. In 2012, he won the award for the Best International Act for BET. So far, in Sarkordie’s career,  he has received 81 awards from 148 nominations.

It is therefore very evident that Sarkordie is going to live an impact in the Ghanaian music industry and the world at large that will last for eternity.
